FlatCat Social Media Project

The UK Libraries' Social Media Workgroup has come up with what we think is a great idea!

The idea is based on the Flat Stanley literacy project (http://www.flatstanley.com/). We've created our own UK version of Flat Stanley, called Flat Cat. We're going to encourage students to take pictures of themselves with Flat Cat and post them to our Facebook page. The image template (PDF) is available on the page (https://www.facebook.com/uklibraries) but we would also like to encourage campus library locations to make paper copies available at service desks. See the attached photo of the display Jen Martin has set up for Young.

In addition to helping improve the utility of the Facebook page, it's also just a fun way to engage students with the library!

UK Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An update from Pat Wilson, Director of Digital Scholarship

Just a note to update you on where to find the UK theses/dissertations that are available electronically. Go to http://UKnowledge.uky.edu and click on the Theses and Dissertations link.

What you will find:

• Electronic UK theses and dissertations (ETD's)published from 2000-2011
• Please know that not all UK theses and dissertations are available electronically--this is the student's choice. Some students still opt for print. The print are cataloged and available in InfoKAT. The ETD's are also cataloged and in InfoKAT.
• Up until the spring of 2010 all ETD's were made available using DSpace, which is searchable in InfoKAT.
• Library IT recently migrated the ETD's in DSpace to UKnowledge.
• The full text of the ETD's are available in UKnowledge.

Some of the migrated ETD's had supplementary files that did not automatically migrate. We are working on loading individually. If you are working with a document that you think may be one of these, let us know so we can follow up.

A couple of other ways to find ETD's in UKnowledge:

• Click on Colleges, Departments, or Centers link.
• To see what ETD's are available for a particular department click on the department; you will see an ETD link for that particular department.
• On the Sidebar of the UKnowledge home page you will see a link for Authors.

join.me

I just put join.me on the ref desk desktop. It's a free screen sharing program.
You send the patron the join-me generated 9-digit number and presto! the patron sees your screen. Try it out. It's easy. I learned about this at Assessment Immersion. Always learning, always sharing.

Reference area printers and paper

The printer screen near Core 1 keeps decalibrating (is that a word?) and so the users are having trouble selecting their print jobs. If they are able to select them, then the arrow will not go to click the print button. It has been calibrated several times and IKON is not sure at what point it goes out of whack. They are ordering an new interface screen which should be here in a couple of days. In the meantime, there is an 'out of order' sign on the printers and IKON will continue to check it until the new part comes in.

On a more positive note: I requested that IKON give us a case of paper and this time they actually said yes! The printers near Core 2 have been jamming quite a bit and IKON said they will do that if the paper trays are low. So if we run out of paper, you can find our stash just inside the door behind the Ready Reference section. It is on the bottom shelf of the black bookcase on the left.

New Procedures for Disability Services Room

Patrons that wish to use the Disability Services Room should sign in on the sign-up sheet located at the reference desk.  They should also be instructed to sign out at the reference desk when they are done using the room.  Also, if a non-UK affiliated patron is using the room, a UK affiliated patron always gets preferential treatment.  Non-UK patrons have a two hour time limit for the room, but if a UK affiliated patron needs to use a machine that is in use by a non-UK patron then the non-UK patron needs to give up the machine.


After 5:00... take the clipboard with the sign-in sheet back to the office and put it with the staplers.  Security will handle sign-in/out after 5:00.

LibraryH3lp chat sounds are not working

On the new reference desk computer, we no longer hear the loud ping to signal a new chat. I've checked the sound settings but I wasn't able to make it any louder. It's barely audible and that's only when you are really listening for it.
I've sent an email to Shawn and the LibraryH3lp support group so hopefully someone will be able to help us figure it out. I think there might be a sound plug-in that needs to be downloaded. I'll post back when I hear anything but in the meantime, you might want to check the chat screen more often in case you don't notice that someone is asking a question.
