Ned Beatty, motion picture, television, and stage actor, was born on July 6, 1937, in St. Matthews, Kentucky, a Louisville suburb. His parents were Charles William Beatty, a salesman, and Margaret (Fortney) Beatty. He won a $100 prize as Louisville's "best breast-fed baby" of 1938 in a contest sponsored by the city Department of Health with a bequest from the will of a local bachelor. Beatty grew up in St. Matthews and attended Eastern High School in Middletown. After a year at Transylvania University in Lexington, Beatty began his professional career as a singer in the 1957-58 production of Wilderness Road in Berea. He was a member of repertory stage companies at the Barter Theatre, Abingdon, Virginia; the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C.; and his hometown's Carriage House Players, Children's Theatre, and Actors Theatre of Louisville . Beatty made his Broadway debut in The Great White Hope in the 1960s.
In 1972 Beatty began his movie career with a featured role as a rape victim in Deliverance. He had roles in Nashville (1975), Silver Streak (1976), Superman (1978), Hopscotch (1980), and The Big Easy (1987). Beatty received an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor for the movie Network in 1976 and an Emmy nomination for best actor for the television movie Friendly Fire in 1979. He starred in the television series Szyszynk in 1977-78. Beatty has worked with the Kentucky Film Office to attract location shooting to the commonwealth and has served as an adviser to Appalshop Productions in Whitesburg. He is the father of eight children from three marriages: Douglas, Lennis, Wally, Charles, John, Blossom, Thomas, and Dorothy.
