Accessing the Microfilm Collection

Until the public PCs are cleaned, we have no access to our microfilm reader/printers. However, both the Fine Arts Library and Special Collections have microfilm equipment that patrons can use. I’ve talked to Gordon and Gail and they know to expect a few more people using the equipment. So if someone needs to read microfilm, we should have them check it out at PNM using a McBee card, and the patron will take the film to either Fine Arts or Special Collections. Please ask them to bring the film back to PNM, but at last resort they can leave the film at the branch library and we will go pick it up.

Regarding the microfilm received through ILL at the Circulation Desk, some can be checked out and the patron can go to Fine Arts or Special for viewing.  For those that are Library Use Only, these will be looked at on a case by case basis and a decision made as to whether the film will be able to leave the building.

Public Computers Systemwide

Update – we think the public PCs are going to be cleaned on Thursday. In the meantime, in addition to checking out a laptop from AV, the public can also try using a PC at another branch library. Here’s info from a recent thread on CIRCCOM:

Each campus library has at least one computer for the public, except:
·     Fine Arts:  Has one standup, lookup computer that is open to the public and a computer behind the circulation desk that is reserved for members of the community needing to do academic research. All other computers require AD accounts for access.
·     Law
·     MCL
·     Transportation

Public Can Check Out Laptops Temporarily

While our public computers are being cleaned, non-UK affiliated patrons (i.e., not UK students, faculty and staff) will be allowed to check out a laptop from the Audio Visual Services Department.  They will need to have a photo ID and register for a UK library card at Circulation first. AV will not be able to check out laptops past 4:00pm, since it requires a supervisor override.

Reminder – BCTC students can always check out laptops from AV.

Update - "official" details on this from Kevin Campbell in AV -->

Given that a generous portion of the public access PCs in WTYL are off limits due to a bed bug infection, special circulation procedures for the loaner laptops are in effect until further notice, which should come shortly after the exterminator takes care of the infestation.

“Special borrowers” (those blue UK library cards, aka KY residents 18+ in age and who are not affiliated with UK or BCTC) are now eligible to check out a laptop from the loan program.  Charging a laptop to a special borrower requires a supervisor override, followed by setting a proper due date/time.  I think we supervisors (Clay, Scott, James, me) know how to do this.

This is doable only when YAVS has a staffer here, as YAVS Student Assistants do not have supervisor override permission.  So, the program is suspended when no YAVS staff is here.  Today, for example, it ends when I leave for the day, as Clay, Scott, and James are not in.

If anyone has questions on this, please let me know.

If the press has questions about the computer cleaning...

...please refer them to Gail Hairston at gghair2@email.uky.edu or 859-257-3302.

Hopefully the custodial crew will have the cleaning done soon.

Thanks,
Jen

Exam Proctoring

As of July 2011. Verified by Julie VH

Ok, I called Independent Study in Funkhouser to verify. I spoke with a woman named Audeena, and she said that they do test proctoring for non-UK students!

In order to set it up, the student just needs to call the Independent Study office at 859-257-3466.

I also called BCTC to double check on their testing policy, and they also do testing for non-UK, non-BCTC students at the Assessment and Testing Center. I think the confusion came in because students were calling the distance learning office, and they only do testing for BCTC students. Sandra Muncy at the Assessment Office sent me the proctoring instructions, which I have attached.

Ok, glad this is all hammered out. :-)

Census information

This is an interactive map that shows county level census info when you hover over a particular area with your mouse. Pretty cool!

Printer Queues

Good morning,

Alas, sometime over the weekend, our trusty Reference Services printer (aka WTYrefprt2_PS3) disappeared. Poof! After extensive testing (hit-or-miss random printing, actually), I think these are the local printers available to us now -->

  • WTY2EL1 (serials)
  • wty1ec772_PS3_Color (office printer by the door)
  • wty1ec772_PCL_Black_Only (same office printer by the door)
  • WTYrefdesk on libprintsrv1 (reference desk)

Thanks,
Jen

UK Yearbooks

Laura Hess just verified that the UK yearbooks are in the process of being digitized and posted online. Currently 1890-1970+ are available. Available at exploreuk.uky.edu

We tried to check the roladex because I think I remember an entry about this but neither of us could get in for some reason. Might try when I'm back at my own desk.
